Klagenfurt Airport - All Information on Klagenfurt Airport (KLU)

Klagenfurt Airport (IATA: KLU, ICAO: LOWK) is an international airport in the Austrian town of Klagenfurt. The airport is only 1.7 miles/2.8 kilometers north-northeast of the city center of Klagenfurt. It's called Flughafen Klagenfurt in German and Karnten Airport in Austria.

The Klagenfurt Airport terminal is a small building with shops, restaurants, and a terrace for passengers and visitors. Mid-sized planes like the Airbus A320 and smaller general aviation aircraft can use the apron's multiple stands. In the absence of jet bridges, passengers must board via bus.

The airport started as a military facility in 1914. In 1925, it was opened as an airport for the cities of Carinthia and Klagenfurt. During World War I, Julius Fedrigoni Etschthal served as the flight director of the airport. It's connected to various cities in Austria, such as Vienna and Germany.

Austrian Airlines, the leading airline at Klagenfurt Airport, closed its ticketing and service counters in the spring of 2014 because fewer people were using them. Instead, the check-in counters got more services. Austrian Airlines ended its domestic Vienna route in April 2015 for economic reasons. Austrian Airlines said that the airport's road and rail connections need to be better for cargo operations because of complaints about noise and a curfew at night. The Austrian military closed its Klagfurt Airport helicopter base in October 2015. Ryanair announced in August 2020 that they would leave the airport and end their Lauda-operated wet lease at Palma de Mallorca Airport.

Austria's Klagenfurt Airport is a small, outdated facility. There are a few dining options, retail outlets, and complimentary wifi here. Airport security prohibits passengers from sleeping on airport property, which is closed at 10:30 p.m. Unlike other airports, this one does not offer lounge access.
